Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

Age-related Macular degeneration is a deterioration or breakdown of the eye’s macula due to age or abnormal blood vessel growth. AMD destroys a person’s central vision and if left untreated can cause blindness.

It is most common in people over 60 but can appear as early as age 40. If you are over age 60, routine eye exams can diagnose early signs of this degenerative eye disease. Symptoms may include blurriness, dark areas, straight lines appearing wavy or crooked, permanent loss of central vision. There are two forms of AMD, dry and wet. Dry AMD is the most common.
